Cannes claim will screen in Toronto on Friday
NEW YORK -- Regent Releasing has nabbed North American rights to Brillante Mendoza's Toronto fest entry "Serbis."
The 2008 Festival de Cannes official choice centers on a Filipino family forced to turn their tumble-down movie house into a hustler-filled smut venue. They grapple with bigamy, unwanted pregnancy, incest and early issues against a harsh landscape.
The Philippine/French production has its North American premiere in Toronto on Friday, followed by a U.S. premiere Oct. 12 at the New York Film Festival. Regent plans a theatrical rollout for the foreign-language film in select U.S. cities in the winter.
Regent's Mark Reinhart negotiated the deal with Fortissimo Films' Michael J. Werner.
